Tom of Finland‘s work is so synonymous with gay culture, that it’s hard to believe there was a time when his art was not being embossed on Westwood Tees, published in Taschen’s latest tome or printed on a luxury bed set. But indeed there was and this latest release, simply titled Tom of Finland, looks back on his remarkable journey.
It begins with Tom aka Touko Valio Laaksonen returning home to Finland after the war and trying to deal with being gay, his desire to draw but also his suspicious sister. The film is a real insight into being gay in the 50s, showing both its dangerous and decadent sides. Tom’s story is equally as important as his artwork – both vital to LGBT history and this film documents them both perfectly.
The film is out now through Peccadillo Pictures on DVD and as a Double Play limited edition Bluray + DVD with fold out double sided poster. What’s more we have one Double Play pack to give away!
