Trans in Trumpland’s Chella Man: “Communities strengthen in resilience.”

Trans in Trumpland is a new four-part docu-series from director Tony Zosherafatain, available to stream now via Topic.

The series introduces us to the lives of four members of the trans community, living in different areas of the USA as they explain their stories and how their lives have personally been affected by Trump’s presidency.

Moving, revealing and sadly still able to shock, Trans in Trumpland should be ‘a required docu-series in history classes around the world’ Executive Producer, Chella Man, tells Loverboy. We talk with him to find out more.

Chella, how did you become involved in Trans in Trumpland?
Jamie and Tony reached out to me! Upon learning the beautiful docu-series was trans-led and produced, I knew it would be incredible to be a part of.

As Executive Producer of the project what did your role entail?
I have meetings with Tony and Jamie on accessibility, social media management/engagement, and hold panels and interviews with the cast and writers! And, of course, I push to get the word out about the film while connecting them to other trans individuals I believe could be involved. It’s a community effort!

What is your hope for the documentary?
I hope this reaches mainstream media as our stories are often hidden there. I dream of this being a required docu-series in history classes around the world! The words and experiences of those involved tell a story we can all relate to as human beings. All we are asking for is respect along with fundamental human rights.

What has been the hardest thing for you personally during Trump’s presidency?
At the beginning of the election, I was seventeen, standing outside my high school in protest of Trump coming to speak there. I was too young to vote, but I did my best to expose his hateful beliefs. Everyday since then has felt like a battle to exist. Unfortunately, it remains a radical act to simply exist as we are. The Trump administration did not let us forget this. Yet, despite it all, these four years also held great beauty. Communities strengthen in resilience. I witnessed respect transform into protection. And, hearts open with understanding.

Biden will remain President for the next 4-8 years. That must be a comfort, but do you worry the Republicans will return to power after that?
At this time, I do not believe anything is permanent. However, this does not mean safety can’t be found in moments. Through the practice of being present, I have felt the deepest relief I’ve ever experienced!

On a personal level, one of my best friends is deaf and wanted me to tell you how great it is to see you representing disabled queer people onscreen! Are you pursuing more acting gigs in 2021? What else is coming up for you? I saw a book is on the way!
This year and each year following holds all kinds of art for me. In mid-March, I’m looking forward to releasing a project I have always dreamed about creating. I can’t wait to share it with the world. I am also continuously open to acting. The role is truly important to me. I have to connect to the foundation and ideology of the character to take it in. And yes! My first book is coming out June 1st, 2021! To read this book is to quite honestly read my diary. This is foreshadowing BUT you’ll figure out that hint after reading the book.

Lastly we are named after the biggest selling single of 2001. So we always ask what is your favourite Mariah Carey song?
I’m not really familiar with her but I like ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’.
