This week the Canadian Cold Wave king, TR/ST, dropped his new self-titled TR/ST EP via legends, Dais Records. Accompanied with news that more new music is on the way, this five track set definitely feels like a showcase of what TR/ST does best and the direction he is headed.
From hooking up with Jake Shears for a slinky, synthy cover of Pet Shop Boys’ 1990 anthem, ‘Being Boring’ to including ‘Slug’ a 2015 fan favourite only previous available on YouTube, TR/ST is keeping one eye on the past. That feeling of nostalgia is in Cold Wave’s DNA and one of the many reasons we love it so. On this EP it is ever-present, even the production on new single, ‘Roborash’, takes us back to the messiest nights in London’s East Bloc losing it to Gaga’s ‘Just Dance’ circa 2010. Even Robert himself declares, ‘I’m so happy to finally have this faggy song released!’ Fags unite!
But TR/ST wisely balances this nostalgia out by showing us what’s cooking in 2024 and it appears that this year we will be fed! ‘Evercall’ is that moment things begin to reawaken after the dark days of winter while ‘Run’ mentally transports us to festivals in summer with its cuuute vocals from Canadian Hyper-Pop star Cecile Believe.
The TR/ST EP is out now via Dais Records.
