One of our favourite films from the last few years was Hong Khaou’s Lilting. Dealing with themes of responsibility, being gay and the loss of a family member, pretty much all of our emotional triggers, the film hit us hard – with amazing performances from its cast including Ben Whishaw and Cheng Pei-Pei.
Now its Director, Hong Khaou, returns with his second film, Monsoon, starring man of the moment, Henry Golding. He plays Kit who returns to Ho Chi Minh City for the first time since he was six years old when his family fled the country in the aftermath of the Vietnam-American war. Struggling to make sense of himself in a city he’s no longer familiar with, he embarks on a personal journey across the country that opens up the possibility for friendship, love and happiness.
We’re excited because the film stars Henry Golding, it features an interracial relationship which doesn’t involve a Caucasian male and deals with the idea of having a confusing sense of identity after moving country as a child – which just so happens to be another of our emotional triggers. Who needs therapy as long as Hong Khaou is making films?!
Monsoon is released in cinemas and through streaming services on 25th September.
