Fiorious has been described as ‘a hybrid of Rick James, Hercules & Love Affair and Sam Sparro,’ three of our favourites so not surprisingly we’re totally feeling his new single ‘No Immunity.’ As if that wasn’t enough, we’ve yet to speak to someone who knows his Mariah shit as much as this guy.
Why the name Fiorious?
It’s just a play on my Italian last name that became a nickname and my musical alter-ego.
Who would we be most surprised to find in your music collection?
I listen to a lot of everything, so nothing is too shocking, but I think some people are genuinely surprised to find out about my gospel leanings. I especially love listening to old live recordings of the Clark Sisters, and my current obsession Le’Andria Johnson. The level of musicianship of their vocals is stupid-amazing, and for me it’s therapeutic, inspirational, and educational all at once.
‘No Immunity’ combines sadness with a disco beat. Over the years this has proven to be a winning combo. Robyn once told us it was her favourite type of track. Why do you think it works so well?
Wise woman, that Robyn. Those are the best songs because we all experience heartbreak, and we all need to push through it. And what better way to do that than with a banging beat.
Has your ex heard ‘No Immunity’?
Ha! Well, I actually didn’t write it about a specific ex, so I got to skip that Adele moment of awkwardness. It’s more of a composite of many different friends’ experiences. I was just trying to capture a bit of that gay cycle of self-destruction and questionable choices in the aftermath of a bad breakup that sends you reeling.
What’s your ‘go to’ disco track?
Impossible question, so I’ll give you three. A song I always lose my shit to is GQ’s ‘Disco Nights,’ perfect groove and chord changes. Also need to say Change’s ‘Glow of Love,’ one of those glorious rays of sunshine at any Sunday afternoon tea dance with the soothing voice of Luther Vandross. Also First Choice’s ‘Let No Man Put Asunder,’ so beautifully arranged and love how it gets funky and gritty with the breakdowns at the end. All very necessary.
OK, I’m gonna break your rules once again. I think her best moment was the Daydream album. There was the ‘Fantasy‘ remix with ODB that is just timeless and continues to kill at every party. Then she had ‘Always Be My Baby‘ which was perfect 90s mid-tempo R&B and the album track ‘Underneath the Stars‘ was her doing wistful 70s soul a la Minnie Riperton – maybe the best thing she’s ever done. And an honorable mention to the classic 90s house remixes where she resang everything from scratch, completely rearranged the melodies and gave them new life. I’m talking about ‘Fantasy’ and ‘Dreamlover‘ that she did with David Morales and ‘Anytime You Need a Friend‘ with C&C Music Factory. Worth digging those up for anyone who loves 90s vocal house.
‘No Immunity’ is out 26th February.
