Loverboy has been saying for the last twelve months how much we want to start dance classes of some kind. While we were originally thinking of Urban Dance class, Andre Corey is putting a strong case forward for the classic pole dancing. We caught up with him to find out more…
What led to you pole dancing?
I went to a free beginner lesson with a friend many years ago for nothing more than a laugh eh. I had never done any form of dance or gymnastics or anything before that except for dancing in my room to pop music growing up haha. I always wanted to do dance and gym lessons I was just a very shy and self conscious growing up.
What is it about pole dancing that interests you?
Everything about pole interests me and there’s so many different elements and styles to pole as well which is fabulous cause who doesn’t love as much diversity as possible! I just love how challenging and physical it is at the end of the day.
Have you had much criticism for it?
Oh I get plenty of criticism and hate from trolls for my pole dancing especially since I started exploring wearing 8 inch heels whilst doing it recently ha. Gender conformity is so basic and people are so hung up on it and it’s so sad eh. “You’re a man why are you dancing like a female” because I want to? Because I can? Because I’m free!
Do you have a goal with your pole dancing?
One day I would like to make pole dancing a full time job and career option for sure! One day… I’d love to compete it some international competitions over the next couple of years and travel around the world teaching workshops If studios will have me haha.
You’re based in New Zealand. Do you intend to stay there?
I def feel like I have kinda reached as far as I can go with pole here in little old NZ so I’m definitely moving on in the next coming year. I want to be presented with more work and opportunities but there’s just none for a boy like me around here π
What is your favourite track to dance to?
You can’t ask that! That’s too hard…. How about favouite artists to dance to? Glass Animals and The Weeknd probably. I like slow kinda sensual stuff where you can just feel the music oozing through your body
You recently spoke about the Buzzfeed video showing bodybuilders trying pole dancing. Can you talk a bit about that? Is it reinforcing stereotypes? Is it laughing at pole dancer’s expense or just something funny?
Haha the video of the body builders trying out pole was hilarious and also done in a nice positive light which is awesome. It just shows you that you can have the biggest muscles out there but that doesn’t mean you have functional strength at all. That’s another reason why I love pole, it lets you love your body for what it can do and not what it looks like and in this day in age we need as much of that as possible right!! Everyone has a chuckle at pole dancing and polers but then when they actually go and try it they are very shocked at how hard it is haha.
What is your favourite Mariah Carey track?
Mariah Carey! I was more of a Spice Girls, Britney and Christina kinda boy haha but I’m def gonna go with Heartbreaker yaaaaa!
