It can be perilous walking into a movie without knowing what you’re in for. I was unfamiliar with Timothy Conigrave’s memoir Holding The Man, so was consequently unprepared for the tale of romance, set against the backdrop of AIDS before then finding out it was all based on a true story.
The film begins in the 70s when Tim meets his long-term partner John for the first time. Tim is an actor while John is a sporting hero. The pair’s relationship burns slowly to begin with before they’re confessing their love for each other and running away from home after being chastised by John’s homophobic father, played by Anthony LaPaglia, with Guy Pearce playing Tim’s Dad. We see the pair’s relationship grow over the years before…well we’re going to keep this review spoiler-free.
