Not an awful lot of things happened in 2020 to be grateful for, however for Loverboy one was discovering Girls of the Internet. Producing the best kind soothing soulful House, with a focus on using live instrumentation, their work was medicinal in 2020 and has continued to heal us since then.
Back then we spoke to Tom Kerridge, who is behind the project about his love for Leigh Bowery, Frankie Knuckles and the fashion clown Thorgy Thor. Using his own paintings of Drag Race girls for artwork, he caught Kim Chi’s eye. Cut to 2023 and now Girls of the Internet are collaborating with one of the biggest names from Drag Race UK – Bimini.
Working together on new single, ‘Moonlight‘, the pair bonded over a love for live music and the underground clubbing scene. Loverboy caught up with Girls of the Internet to find out more…
Congratulations on ‘Moonlight’. It feels so 360 to have spoken with you three years ago and painting queens for your artwork to now be working with them! Tell us about this journey…
Well, I had Kim Chi DMing me when she saw some of my paintings of her which was pretty cool!
And how did you come to work with Bimini?
Bim’s management approached us about contributing toward their next single, which I programmed
some beats, and wrote the baseline and strings for – but I made my own club versions of the track, which
the label ended up liking so much they are releasing them!
Bimini has already released some music. Were you looking to take them in a new direction?
Yeah, I was keen to get Bimini back into an underground club setting, as that’s where they cut their teeth
as a drag performer.
It feels like live instrumentation is important to both of you?
For sure – I think the collaboration makes sense in a lot of ways. We’re also both from the same part of
the UK!
Tell us about the remixes that are coming soon…
I don’t really class them as remixes, they’re more my versions. There is the ’Sunset Mix’, which is a bit
more Balearic, slower, and the ‘Moonlight Mix’, which is a bit more clubby and bass-heavy.
In the past the quality of Drag Race queens’ music has not always been stellar but things have definitely turned around in the last few years. How have you seen it evolve and where do you see it going?
Your tone seems very pointed! I think there’s some decent music out there by queens, but a lot of it sits
more in the ‘Drag Music’ category. Alaska and Bob and a few others have made some really solid music,
but yeah, there’s some truly awful stuff. I think as Drag sinks further into mainstream and underground
culture, we’ll see more and more great Drag music.
Which other queens would you like to write for? Let’s manifest it!
Peppermint! I’d love to write Peppermint a big disco track. Also Monet would be amazing – I love her
voice. Non Drag Race, I always wanted to work with Lady Red Couture (RIP). Ada Vox has an insane
voice too.
What else are you working on at the moment?
Our next album is in the works, which will be released summer 2024 if all goes to plan.
We need a show in Barcelona please! Any plans?
We’re ready! We just need somebody to book us – hassle your local venue/promoter!
Last time you told us your favourite Mariah song was GTFO but it changed from day to day. So today we would like to know which song of hers you would like to remix and what direction you would take it in? And also your favourite MC song of the day! Haha…
Well, I’ve already remixed GTFO. It’s out there – google it! I’m not good at picking favourites – I was
watching her live mashup of Love Hangover / Heartbreaker the other day though. So good!
‘Moonlight’ by Bimini & Girls of the Internet is out now.
