Dragony Aunts: ‘It depends how you define success – for me of course it’s money.’

Today sees the return of our two favourite Dragony Aunts and their aptly-named, Comedy Central series….Dragony Aunts! Together Candy Warhol and Crystal Rasmussen are back for a second season to fix the world’s problems, one slap at a time.

This time around the drag duo offers advice to anxiety-ridden celebs like Mutya Buena, Charity Shop Sue and The Cheeky Girls. Not only that, but they’re back later this year for Dragony Aunts: the Podcast where they will be joined by Monét X-Change, Divina Di Campo and more.

We catch up with Crystal and Candy to discuss the best advice they’ve given, the Mischa Barton School of Psychology and Candy’s relationship with Martine McCutcheon & Liza Minnelli.

How did you two come together for Dragony Aunts?
Candy: After coming up together on the Ukrainian music scene in the early seventies, we decided to part ways after our record label went bust and the gigs dried up. Decades later Comedy Central casted us separately by chance and we’ve been together ever since.
Crystal:
We actually met on the LA silent movie scene in the early 1920s. I’d known of Candy’s work for a while — especially her viral cosplay gymnastics routines and her famous book ’The Botanist’s Guide to Deadheading.’ Really inspirational stuff. So when Comedy Central approached us about working on a series looking at the profound history of contemporary dance we were thrilled to link up. We followed each other on LinkedIn and the rest is, as they say, herstory.

What is your greatest success story in terms of giving advice?
Crystal: It depends how you define success (for me it’s of course money, as well as the tearing down of capitalism), but the best moments are where we learn something too. Often advice isn’t conclusive — it really tends to be about asking more questions like: wanna invite a friend? Can it go deeper? Paypal or Venmo? Either’s fine.
Candy:
When myself and Crystal invented post-its after high school I suggested we make them yellow and I’m quite proud of that. And listen hun, I haven’t got this far by giving bad advice and if I ever have, I’ll always deny it, just ask Lisa Scott-Lee.

What have you learned about yourselves from giving advice?
Candy: We do a lot of intense emotional work on the show – hypnosis, slap therapy (where we slap guests until their dilemma is solved) and of course through our ouija board. I’ve learned a lot about myself and my past – specifically about my relationships with Martine McCutcheon and Liza Minnelli. I also learned that David’s dead and I wasn’t prepared for that.
Crystal: I’ve learned that listening is always more important than speaking, and that Candy’s diploma from the Mischa Barton School of Psychology is a must for anyone looking to give advice.

Mutya Buena is a guest on Season 2. Are you going to join her as the new Sugababes trio?
Candy: Listen hun, you know, she asked me and as a fellow Irish queen, I also had Siobhan’s blessing. But as a true Sugababes stan I just want the see the original three back in action and I used my backstage time with Mutya time to push my agenda and get her to spill the tea. As a true queen, she didn’t disappoint.
Crystal: Well she’s begged and begged, but to be honest we’re actually working on a project with Heidi Range and Sarah Harding called Bitter, Quiet Ladies — catchy right?

You have a podcast on the way too, do you get in drag to record that too?
Crystal: What’s drag? I’ve never heard of it? If you’re asking whether we dressed up: yes indeed, it’s always important to dress up. Personally I’ve been wearing a lot of pyjamas, stained track pants, and cowl neck sweaters.
Candy:
I did actually – it ironically gave me a sense of normality in a somewhat confusing time. It’s funny that this summer every queen in the world became a bedroom queen! Although in isolation, it’s nice to turn a look, feel good and to maintain a source of creativity.

Lastly we are named after the infamous Mariah Carey song. So what is your favourite Mariah song?
Crystal: Mariah, I know I’ve been dodging your calls but I’ve just been trying to take some space. Mimi’s a good friend of mine, we go way back to the MTV Unplugged days. That time was really special — a sort of circuit of icons, and I was lucky enough to teach them all they know. I feel emotional about that time, and so my favourite song would have to be one that reflects that: ‘Emotions’. The thing that few people know is that it’s actually me on the high notes there. Of course Mariah eventually learned how to do it, but it takes years of practice so I was just happy to step in to support a friend.
Candy: I don’t know her. But if I had to choose, I would say ‘Heartbreaker’ – it’s a total tune and I’ve always loved the video. That bathroom cat-fight? Iconic. Failing that I could watch a montage of her saying ‘festive’ all night.

Dragony Aunts series 2 is available to stream on Comedy Central’s YouTube, Facebook and IGTV platforms.
Dragony Aunts: The Podcast will be available from this September.
