"The day I got my drivers license I escaped and drove about two hours to my first dance class in Hollywood that very night."
Little Richard. Grace Jones. Elvis. David Bowie. With idols like that, is it any wonder we’re obsessed with Boy Radio.
Did you have a previous incarnation prior to Boy Radio?
First off, hello Loverboy! I was sixteen the first time I acknowledged anything ‘Radio’ related. I grew up in a quiet city in Southern California, so the day I got my drivers license I escaped to explore my wanderlust by driving about two hours that same night to my first dance class in Hollywood.
I’d go every week, and then one day I noticed some beautiful soul had graffitied a huge radio by the highway exit. I think that started a fire in me to keep driving out for classes and that symbol became a sort of beacon for me at a young age.
Where did the name/image come from? Which other other alter egos were you looking towards?
Honestly, I grew up in a very musical household. My Mom owned hundreds of records on vinyl, and I discovered most of them without any introduction or explanation. So by curiosity, I was educated by teachers like Little Richard and Elvis, Grace Jones and David Bowie… Those are just a few from a much larger list. My name is inspired by artists I watched growing up as well as the politics of their eras, and a ‘no fucks, no excuses’ attitude that comes from being ambitious in a proper city.
Do you collaborate with anyone on the image, the conception, the music?
Yes! There has been much musical collaboration lately and I’m very excited to be working with dedicated and eclectic groups of artists and musicians right now. Image is evolutionary and I’m grateful for the support that has come from having the confidence to explore new looks and power dynamics through fashion. This photo set was shot and styled by Fred Attenborough (@fcaphotonyc) We met at his studio, had a beer, some legendary conversation, took pictures, more beer, got naked, more conversation, and more pictures. Good imagery is a conversation for me and I was happy to create strong moments through visual art with someone as authentic and present as Fred.
How would you describe your music?
I would say that I am a pop artist and the music I make falls into several libraries of description. At the moment it’s sound is focused in pop and r&b.
What’s your favourite Boy Radio song to date?
My favorite song to date is TRUST because I really love singing along to it. Stream it here.
What was it like making the ‘Trust’ video?
It was so sexy. I’ve always had a strange attraction to fairs and carnivals. Like, I could be driving and see a fair off the highway and will pull over to go in. Director Matt Sparks and I wanted to explore romance and movement in a very well lit environment. So I suggested we filmed at the Kings County Fair in Brooklyn. Not too many people know but it happens every summer.
Filming ‘Trust’ was kind of a dream for us. There were maybe 60 people at the fair on a Friday night and we were given full permission to take over as long as we paid admission. All my inhibitions disappear when I dance so I had a really good time performing in front of all those spinning lights.
What’s next for Boy Radio?
I always stay posted via @boy.radio on instagram with visual art, music releases and collaborations so that’s always next.
I’ll be having a few project premiers this month and throughout the year!
We’re named after the infamous Mariah Carey song. What’s your favourite Mariah song?
Okay, ‘Fantasy’ is legit my favorite MC song and video! I love that ODB and Mariah go back like babies with pacifiers… and the music video was filmed at a fair so from the roller coasters to the whistle tones she pretty much had me.
