BLACK. x Marquis

When we first saw Marquis‘ BLACK. we were reminded of when things seemed less complicated, well at least in our head they were, maybe we were just wearing rose-tinted glasses. But with BLACK. Marquis is definitely reimagining and revisiting our favourite decade so we were thrilled he gave us this as an exclusive. We spoke to him to find out more…

Marquis, tell me about how you go to this point. Have you always been an artist?
I’ve always been a creative since I was a wee lad. I’ve always been inspired by authenticity. The subtle moments that move you, like a refreshing cold glass of lemonade on a hot day, or twerking in the club to your squad’s fav song.

What lead to the creation of BLACK.?
BLACK. was created from pent-up artistic frustration and passion. It came about in my head one night as I walked home, I saw it – a vision. I just knew I had to document my idea and bring it into fruition.

Can you tell us about the narrative…
The narrative of BLACK. is a quasi-throwback to the 80’s/90’s when vulnerable, unapologetically POC roamed, courageous & harmonious. It is open to interpretation, but ultimately the ‘message’ is LOVE.

Can you discuss with us the way film addresses gender…
I chose Malaysia Brown (short hair), Niambi Nelson (afro) and myself for this project because we all possess & share an androgynous vibe, which is where we all fell in-love with each other and it really shows on screen. We played off each other’s fem/masc––dom/sub energies.

We should address the Philadelphia Rainbow Flag too. What do you make of it?
I think surrounding recent LGBT racial events in Philly that yes it may be necessary for that community to raise their fists and demand expulsion of the racism and injustices and I know there are other POC across the nation that can empathize on why they felt the need to add the brown and black stripe.
This whole flag debate is really stupid to me because the idea of the flag is supposed to symbolize inclusion yet we do the exact opposite. It’s crazy but I just this week I just lost a friend over a debacle on Facebook over this very topic. I think the people whom oppose should truly evaluate WHY. We need to be united more than ever in these dark (trump) days.

What’s next for you?
Up Next? I’m moving to Los Angeles in July for a career as a visual artist. I plan to produce, direct, and model in more short-films and music videos! Im not limiting myself to any degree! I plan to hit the ground running and collaborate ’til my calendar is completely booked! Definitely keep your eyes peeled and your notifications ON!

Last but not least, we are named after the iconic Mariah Carey song. What is your favourite Mariah song?
Fav Mariah Carey joint? Easy! My life, My Heart, My Soul – ‘When You Believe’ feat Whitney Houston (RIP NIPPY).
I remember watching The Prince of Egypt as a youth and that movie will always have a special place in my heart, but it was Mariah and Whitney’s performance in this song that brings me to tears almost every-damn-time.
