"It’s satirical and subversive cabaret, darlings"
Loverboy adores a bit of historical queerness. We get where we need to go by looking how far we’ve come and how we got here. One of the most extraordinary queer times was Berlin in the 20s and 30s. Weimar Berlin was a time of hedonism, a red hot political underground, and outstandingly filthy and marvelous creativity. Think Marlene Dietrich on stage with a woman duetting about their ‘special girlfriend’. Think Liza in Cabaret. Weimar Kabarett (you pronounce the T; it’s satirical and subversive cabaret, darlings) continues to inform the current new-cabaret scenes across the globe. And it certainly could be seen as a direct thread through to San Fransciso’s legendary Cockettes in the 70s. Which is why it is so freaking fabulous that a new piece of theatre by an original Cockette, Scrumbly Koldewyn, performed by The Thrillpeddlers, is opening tonight at the Hypnodrome in San Francisco. Running until 28th May, The Untamed Stage: Weimar Berlin Kabarett is a don’t miss it event and a new piece of our wonderful history in the making.
