"I make masks and armour out of worn sports shoes."
An unexpected perk of watching the recent drag documentary, Dressed As A Girl, was seeing Graham Cruz hanging out in a hot tub in a pair of yellow speedos. But to be fair this is not an irregular occurrence. Even he says he rarely leaves the house unless he’s half naked. Anyway we thought we’d catch up with him to discuss his fetishes, his kid’s TV presenting past and why he wants to be buried as a Bond villain.
What do you do for a living ?
I’m a freelance menswear stylist and art director. (See an Adidas jock that Cruz made, at the bottom of this piece. It’s hot.)
What pays the bills ?
I do a lot of work on shows and events and do some costume design for a couple of long-standing clients. Traditionally the better paid jobs are less creative, but I’m lucky to have some great clients who give me room to be creative.
What keeps you happy creatively?
Last year I started a personal art project – Sports Militia (Instagram: @SportsMilitia). The project started as an exploration of sportswear fetish through photography, film and sculpted objects – I make masks and armour out of worn sports shoes. Basically it involves exploring my kinks!
I heard you mention you were on to at some point? What was that for?
Hahah…It’s true I have a dodgy TV past. Back home in Ireland I worked quite a lot on TV in the 90’s and 00’s. I started as a children’s TV presenter. Next I presented some music shows then had a weekly fashion slot on daytime tv and also worked on a makeover show 🙈
What’s your favourite outfit to go out in?
It depends where I’m going to be honest. Actually that’s bullshit, I always end up half naked no matter where I’m going.
So I’d have to say Air Max, tiny pants and a ski mask. Plus, you can never go wrong with a tonne of jewellery – subtlety was never my strong point.
What would you be buried in?
Charcoal Brioni single-breasted, two button suit, black roll neck, Louis leeman slippers and an eye patch…… Send me out like a Bond Villain.
Did you ever think you’d have this many tattoos?
Not initially, but I realised after tattoo number three that I was hooked. I had my first tattoo at seventeen, a terrible Pammy Anderson one. A barbed wire band around my ankle….the shame!
Do you want any more?
I’m working on a full body suit. I wanna cover every inch apart from my hands, face, dick and balls. All the rest is fair game. I’ve given myself twenty-five years from my first tattoo to finish it. I’m nearly done, which is lucky, ’cause the time’s nearly up.
Who do you instagram creep?
I creep on the boys at Slick It Up because they look like a tonne of fun, I’m sure we’d get along. And also Mister Maciste. Hotness in a box.
What is your favourite Mariah Carey track?
It’s gotta be Breakdown ft. Bone Thugs & Harmony. It’s easy to forget just how gangsta Mariah is, but everything about that is stone cold thug.
