Release the rats! Today the Brooklyn, noise-rock quartet Model/Actriz announce their return with new single, ‘Cinderella‘, and album to follow, Pirouette, out 2nd May via True Panther/Dirty Hit. Available to pre-order now.
It feels like only yesterday we were conversing with frontman Cole Hayden, as he extolled the virtues of the legend Liza Minelli and said of the band’s debut, Dogsbody – ‘I made this album for the gays.‘ Thankfully Cole continues to cater 2 us on this return, covering all bases with both a tale of a date with a beautiful man and a memory of wanting a Cinderella party aged 5.
“Cinderella distills within it many of the objectives that would become the lifeblood of Pirouette. The song switches between moments of tension and fluidity, dissonance and harmony: we aimed to write something with an inherent brightness that differed anything we had made before, and the light that shines through the song was made not through removing darkness, but through upping the contrast. The lyrics were written in response to that canvas, and give voice to an inner dialogue I once had while on a date with a beautiful man. It’s a song about the realization that there was shame and pain I carried long after it had become obsolete, and while it was uncertain if I would ever see this person again, I could remember him always as the mysterious catalyst that released me from it.” Cole Hayden.
‘Cinderella’ carries that same seductive tension present across much of Dogsbody but there is also this new-found lightness which which will make the descent into the darkness of Pirouette even more satisfying. Cole channels his inner ingenue as he sings, ‘You make me want to be ready. I feel different now than I did before.’ A line which will continue to haunt us in the best way. You can hear more from the band’s second album on their upcoming tour which they also announce today, playing two UK dates at London’s Lido Festival and Manchester’s Outbreak Festival.
