Alas our favourite Drag Race franchise has come to an end for another year. Drag Race España continues to feature the greatest judging panel, the most drama and is the closest thing we’ll ever have to the return of Eurotrash. Yeah, we’re old, bitch! And so with the finale of Season 3 also comes the crowing of our new Spain’s Next Drag Superstar, Pitita! A queen who came armed with a gaggy wardrobe, packed with campy references and homages to Spanish designers, food and even landmarks. Plus she slayed the acting challenges with her characters – someone hook us up with that Catalan farmer pronto. Pitita spoke to Loverboy about keeping secrets, LGBT life in Spain and how shockingly Mariah was not style inspo for her broken finger. Perdonaaaa?!
Congratulations on your win. How has it been waiting since filming of the season and the airing of the finale?
The wait has felt like forever, but the hope I’ve had to have for all these months has made it worth it. I couldn’t keep it a secret from my family and creative team, obviously, but even in those cases many people would rather find out for themselves.
What would you like to achieve now, with the title of Spain’s Next Drag Superstar?
I would love to be able to bring my drag to different countries and spread the Spanish brand from my perspective that holds a strong vision of folklore and fashion.
You mentioned trans rights in your finale speech and I wondered if you saw politics/activism in your future?
I’ve had the pleasure of being part of an LGBTQA+ radio program for many years. This has made me realise how important activism is among people from our community, many who feel they have a strong voice and want to speak out and be an example.
Spain recently passed the new Transgender law that offers hope for the Transgender community in your country. How do you feel about LGBT+ life in Spain?
On a positive note, our country has passed through some dark times not that long ago, and the fact that we have new laws like this makes me believe we’ve done great work in recent times. On a bad note, extreme fascism is getting stronger in some parts of the world and that makes us more worried about our recent achievements than we should be.
You brought incredible looks to every episode of Drag Race España. Can you tell us more about the journey from designing to the creation of Pitita?
First of all, thank you for your words. I feel very proud of all the work my team and I did for the show. As you say, I’ve been designing for some years now, so I would say all my previous years designing for cinema, red carpets, other drag queens and show business in general have given me the refences I needed to create. Some of my previous work may have some Pitita style, but every single opportunity I’ve had to design I did think of the project and the customer at the time.
The judge on Episode 3 was the great Palomo Spain. When he was iconically critiquing Chanel, what was running through your mind? (That Extremadura outfit was perfection)
I was very excited to get to know Palomo. He is a former judge on a fashion talent show in Spain, a show I almost got in two times many years ago. So the fact that Palomo was going to finally judge an outfit of mine was a thrill. I certainly got nervous listening to the critiques because he would call it how it is and my dress (it was not perfect but shhhh…) had some little issues that I would have understood could get a critique.
In the UK, drag queens can now be seen on other reality competitions like Masterchef. Our request is please speak to Palomo and tell him we need Maestros De La Costura to return with celebrities. Would you enter?
Actually, as I am answering this interview, they just announced Maestros is coming back. I don’t know if they would make a celebrity version but if not, I am about to apply for it anyway.
How many marriage proposals did you receive in your DMs after dressing up as a Catalan farmer? We hope you saw ours!
Thank you for sending it, you were the only one! But I also think I looked hot.
There were some moments with Pink Chadora and Visa, when they had some things to say about you. How did you feel about this watching the season back?
I understand we are all under big pressure when being judged next to each other, which obviously when you are not that sure about your work because you are being put in new situations, feelings rise, and situations happen. I respect and admire my colleagues and we get on amazingly. If I had any bad comments about them, I wouldn’t say it publicly because it’s not my style.
The emotion you served in the final lip sync was everything. Which song is your favourite to lip sync to and which song would you like to see performed on Drag Race Espana?
Thank you, I really enjoyed doing Rocio Jurado. My favourite song is any song from Yma Sumac, her most famous one is Mambo N.1, performed before in the US franchise. I would love to see Isabel Pantoja’s ‘Veneno.’
Can you tell us three non-Drag Race Barcelona queens that we need to follow?
1. Lady Red Velvet: she is one of my best friends and best entertainers in the country. Six time awarded winner in Ravalada (one of our most important drag contests in the country) and a Brit-camp soul who also raises money for charities in many of her weekly shows.
2. Daphne Monroe: a not so baby drag queen but young, a gorgeous piece of art who performs to the nail. She amazes every audience with her dancing and creates looks and wigs for other drag queens.
3. Patrick Perez Transformista: one of the oldest and most classic drag queens from Barcelona who has been entertaining for years with her green humour and amazing Pantoja impersonations. A classic that must be followed forever.
Lastly we are named after the biggest-selling song of 2001. So we always ask what is your favourite Mariah Carey song? (Also was Mariah’s diamanté-encrusted arm sling the style inspo for your finger?!)
Sadly no. I love Mariah, but my inspiration was Lady Gaga in American Horror Story Hotel. I love to perform ‘Emotions’ because it’s the campiest and the most difficult to lip-sync to well.
