Last time Loverboy spoke with Tama Gucci, he was telling us that he named his new EP Almost Blue because, well, ‘Blue is my favourite colour.’ Now comes After Dark Deluxe Edition which see Tama turn up the heat and also the tempo – ‘It’s for the clubs!’
The video for lead single, ‘Compeition’ has now dropped and the Deluxe will be upon us shortly. For now, here’s Tama telling us about being a Leo in Starbucks and duhhhh….Tamagotchis!
Tama Gucci, how are you? I cannot believe it’s taken until our second Q&A for me to suddenly hear the Tamagotchi name connection! Ahah…what was the oldest Tamagotchi you had? Tell us about it.
Hii, I’m doing really good. I’m glad it’s Fall. The weather has been so fab but omg the oldest tamagotchi I had I think was the second version of the series and my pet was named Kiki. She died of old age – almost 5 months after I first hatched her. lol. I was a serious parent.
Last time we spoke was the week you dropped Almost Blue. You’ve just dropped After Dark Deluxe Edition. What more did you feel you wanted to say for this era?
I still feel like I’m in my Pink Friday era. The After Dark Deluxe is just an addition to what else I have to say. It’s for the clubs!!
Last time we spoke we told you that ‘Competition’ was Loverboy’s #1 on the EP. Is this why you made a video for it? Just for us?! <3
Yes, Loverboy just for you lol 
The vibe of ‘Challenge’ and challenging others to meet you on the dancefloor gives me total Destiny’s Child ‘Lose My Breath’ and the video has a little ‘Waiting For Tonight’ moment. What songs/videos were relevant to you when writing the song and creating the video?
Well those are two amazing references. To be honest I wrote the song not really inspired by anything I’ve heard. I just wanted to challenge people to dance! The music video was where the inspo came in! Janet Jackson and Britney music videos all have great dancing combos we definitely wanted to channel that!
You’re a Britney fan and love her Circus era which was kind of a dark period for her. How do you feel about revisiting those albums now?
I still feel like it’s perfect! Life imitates art you can definitely tell where she was during that era. She did it flawlessly while going through so much!
You are a Leo. When was the last time that Leo energy popped out?
Umm at Starbucks 2 days ago when somebody tried to cut me in line. lol. I just had to give them that look and they knew!
If we jetsetted over to NYC for a date with Tama Gucci – where would you be taking us?
To Sugarfish in soho! The best sushi in NYC I would say.
