Borja & Bad Bitch Samantha: ‘Let’s conquer the world!’

To foreign audiences, the films of Pedro Almodovar may seem an exaggeration. Hispanic histrionics with characters and plottwists that could not possibly exist. Except they do. This year marks Loverboy’s fourth year in the city of Barcelona and our life has been consistently more Tacones than Vicky Cristina Barcelona. ¡Por suerte!

So to celebrate our fourth anniversary, one year closer to being a Spanish citizen, we thought we’d bring two together two of our favourite artistes – the “reina de los bajos fondos”, Samantha Hudson & visual artist Borja Casterad to discuss Activism, Power-bottoming and Lenin Vs. Stalin.

Samantha Hudson has just released her latest single, ‘Hazme el favor (vente conmigo a bailar)’ – or ‘Do me a favour (come dance with me)’ en inglés – while Borja is making the most of quarantine and going into production-overdrive while preparing for his move to Madrid later this year….

Why did you choose the name Samantha Hudson?
No real reason. It just fits me so well. It could easily be the name of an American suburban mom who picks up their children from karate and drives an SUV, and I think that’s exactly the kind of energy I want to give off.

What makes you unique?
Hahaha, that’s a good question. I would say my sense of humour. I really believe it is the key to all that I’m achieving. It’s one of the things I like most about myself. Oh, and also my huge enormous breasts.

What places do you recommend in Magaluf?
Magaluf is well known for being the birthplace of the drug “canibal“, balconing and alcohol poisoning. It is also the place where I was raised. So, apart from all the amazing pubs to party at, I would highly recommend its beaches. In summer, they are always full of annoying tourists, but there’s nothing I love more than being surrounded by tons of drunk screaming British crackheads, throwing up all over the place.

Are you preparing a new album?
Not really…I recently signed to Subterfuge, which is one of  the most important independent music labels in Spain. Our plan is to come up with eleven songs over the next three years, whether they’re singles or not. That said, even though I already have one album, I’m already looking forward to the next one.

What advice would you give to the new generation of power bottoms?
To not douche religiously. You can do it once in a while, but pouring water inside your asshole on a daily basis is simply not okay for your body. Emancipate yourself from the tops! Take what is yours, be free! Sex is not bad but us! Powerbottoms are too powerful to waste our time with some dusty-ass tops. Let’s gather round and conquer the world!

What do you contribute in terms of LGBT activism?
I don’t really think of myself as an activist. I do think I’m very eloquent and that maybe how I express myself or speak on certain topics could lead people to see me as some kind of LGBT activist. But I think it’s just that I’m a good storyteller and have lots to say. But in my opinion, each of us contribute to this cause and everyone has their own fight. I may be a little bit more outrageous than others and I admit it’s hard to be yourself nowadays, but I feel I’m very regular and not doing more than anyone else.

Lenin or Stalin?
Britney Spears. You better work bitch!

What inspires you to create?
My work is inspired by my environment, the things that surround me, my life experiences and personal beliefs. It is heavily overfed on random content and images from the internet. I find trash culture and humour fundamental tools to achieving a perfect development of our process as artists.

I know you’ve been designing t-shirts. Have you ever thought about getting serious with the Fashion Industry?
I’ve gained a lot of production time during quarantine. Social distancing has really made me get my shit together and I don’t want to lose that momentum. Nowadays fashion is consumed in a really fast and massive way. Personally, I believe my creative process wouldn’t be able to handle that rhythm of production.

Do you think Visual Arts are valued in Spain?
Not really. Spain is not a country known for its devotion to the Arts, even though there are obviously plenty of delicious, super-interesting artists. The thing is that Art’s value is more quantified than appreciated.

Is Barcelona actually a good city to develop yourself as an artist?
Any city can be a good choice due to social media and its power to reach everyone from any place. Although I have to admit Barcelona, as a consequence of its massive tourism, hasn’t been able to improve and evolve its artistic scene, at least not as much as Madrid.

Do you have long-term aspirations?
Yes, of course. But I also fantasize about being Britney Spears! Haha…I really do try not to overthink the future and just focus on the present. Aspirations and goals really frustrate and overwhelm me. They pollute my mood.

And finally, would you rather have one giant boob in the middle of your chest, or three little small boobs?
Without a doubt, I would choose the three little titties. I come from a legacy of women with big breasts and I really know the problems huge boobs bring with them. Furthermore, my style would be Juliette Lewis, rather than Pamela Anderson. With one huge boob I would have to change my whole wardrobe!
